Right now I'm very lucky and I work at a job where dress is not an issue. At my previous job I was explicitly told that it would 'look good' for me to wear a tie. I was also told to keep my desk cleared at the end of each day (right!!) and was told to keep my office door closed on occassions when important factory tours came through our area. Fortunitly I'm technically competent at what I do at work and I left that company on my own terms. It was actually a very good job with good people. They just had some quirks about appearance. The clean desk policy really got to me because I really needed to be able to spread out a lot of information around me. That's my story and I'm sticky to it.
